Netherlands Wheelchair Rugby League Head Coach Jim Dyson has appointed Dan Robinson and Ben Dunwell as his assistant coaches, marking an important step in establishing the national programme.

Robinson joins as a qualified Level 2 coach with experience in player development, establishing clubs and creating opportunities for athletes of all abilities. His background in growing participation and building sustainable programmes will support the recruitment and development of players as wheelchair rugby league takes shape in the Netherlands.

Dunwell brings extensive playing experience with clubs including Batley Bulldogs and Wakefield Trinity, alongside representative honours with Colostomy UK and the Armed Forces wheelchair rugby league teams. A Royal Navy veteran and disabled athlete, he is also an assistant coach with the Ragnarok Wheelchair Rugby League Coaching Academy.

Having captained Wakefield under Dyson, Dunwell brings an established working relationship with the head coach, alongside a shared commitment to player development, fitness and professionalism.

Together, Robinson and Dunwell will help build a sustainable Dutch wheelchair rugby league programme, supporting player recruitment, coach development and the country’s international ambitions. Creating meaningful opportunities for disabled athletes will be central to that work.

Announcing the appointments, Dyson said:

“I’m really excited to announce my first appointments as Netherlands Wheelchair Rugby League Head Coach.

“Dan approached me following my appointment and immediately came across as an ambitious, passionate coach with a strong CV. Having helped create a club from scratch, he brings valuable experience as we launch our own programme. He will play an important role in recruitment, including helping disabled athletes from other sports make the transition to wheelchair rugby league.

“Ben was my captain at Wakefield Trinity, and I knew I wanted him involved. His passion, professionalism and determination to succeed make him someone I can rely on and trust. His approach to fitness and discipline will help us build the standards we want for De Vliegende Leeuwen and, in time, become a formidable force on the court.”

Training will begin in January 2027.

If you are a disabled athlete with Dutch nationality or heritage and would like to get involved, we would love to hear from you. Expressions of interest are welcome from both experienced players and those new to wheelchair rugby league.
